U4-complete renovation
The concept for the redevelopment of Universitätsplatz 4, designated for the Faculty of Environmental, Regional and Educational Sciences (URBI), is based on the following principles:
- Preservation of the listed main building and its structural configuration
- Optimization of inadequate existing structures (annex building, attic floor) while respecting heritage protection requirements
- Extension of the vertical circulation system
- Creation of a connection between the annex building and the main building on all levels
- Optimization of internal circulation through the addition of an extra gallery corridor
- Implementation of the spatial and functional program with a focus on consolidating functional areas
- Enhancement of the courtyards
- Creation of a functional and flexible university building (objective)
The spatial structure of the main building will be retained. Elements worthy of preservation will be refurbished, while additional partitions and doors will only be installed where necessary. The attic extension from 1985–89, built in solid construction, will be dismantled and replaced by a new roof structure. This will provide the required spatial configuration for teaching areas and correct the level discrepancies of the current roof zone.
The annex building will be stripped back to its structural core across all floors in order to create space for large seminar rooms. The annex staircase will be modified, and a new connection to the main building on all levels is incorporated into the design.
All structural alterations will be carried out in accordance with heritage protection requirements and with consideration for both the interior and exterior appearance of the ensemble. In the existing building, continuous horizontal circulation across all rooms on each floor is not currently provided. By adding a supplementary gallery along the courtyard side (in front of the northeast wing), a continuous walkway is created on all levels, contributing to the overall functional enhancement of the building. The new gallery will feature a transparent façade that preserves views of the original historic façade and will be greened using a climbing structure.
The concept also includes planting the courtyards with two trees and introducing vertical greenery on the glass façade of the new gallery. Together with new seating areas, the courtyards will become attractive spaces for students and staff.
